Saturday October 15th, 2011 - 2nd Annual Pittsboro By Gaslight

PITTSBORO BY GASLIGHT is an all day event held in Pittsboro, NC. Take a step through time and see what Pittsboro was like at the turn of the last century. Brought to you by the good folks at the Pittsboro Business Association, local artists, and people like you.

The Second Annual Pittsboro By Gaslight will be held on Saturday October 15th, 2011. There will be numerous (perhaps humorous) activities to experience throughout the day. Dressing up is highly encouraged.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

Throughout the day beginning @ 12pm, we will have a variety of musicians busking around the downtown area & stopping at local shoppes for some impromptu indoor entertainment.

12pm: The Festivities begin. Make sure you pick up your 'Pittsboro By Gaslight' program. Wandering Minstrels will be all around the downtown area.

12pm to 7:30pm: Have Egg Cremes, Sundaes, Frappes and other tasty treats at S&T Soda Shoppe.

1pm: LIVE MUSIC @ the Joyful Jewel, Union Protest Songs with Susan Ketchin & the friends.

1pm: "Textbook Tease: Cultivation of Character/ Signatures in Movement" class at Davenport & Winkleperry.
We all have a character we portray when we get on the stage. Whether your stage is the bedroom for one, or in a spotlight in front of hundreds how we project that character with our bodies and face are extremely important. This class is about knowing what you want to reveal to the audience and it ain't all about the skin you show! Talloolah Love cultivates the character you have with this class. Part lecture, part dance class, so bring paper and something to write with, and be prepared to move, dance and sweat! Heels are not necessary, but they certainly are not discouraged.

1pm to 3pm: LIVE MUSIC @ Starrlight Mead with Justin Johnson

1pm to 6pm: LIVE PERFORMANCE & TAROT READINGS outside of Starrlight Mead with Ouida de la Goutierre, North Carolina's own Bearded Lady & Fortune Teller. Live Performances at 2pm, 3:30pm, and 5pm. Tarot Readings throughout the afternoon.

1:30pm to 4pm: LIVE MUSIC @ The City Tap with Thunder & Spice.

4pm: "Fictitious History" Walking Tour; Meeting at the corner of Hillsborough & Salisbury.

5pm: LIVE MUSIC on the Porch @ The Chatham Marketplace with Six Lives Colliding.


6pm - 8pm: Potters of the Joyful Jewel present the spectacular "Masks on Parade." The unveiling of potters and other artists beginning at 6pm with a parade of masks throughout downtown and ending with a reception at the Joyful Jewel from 6:30 - 8pm.

Beginning @ 7pm, several downtown businesses will be playing host to some wonderful live music & performers.

PERFORMERS: Sara Beaman

Sara Beaman has been performing bellydance since 2002 in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina. Her main influences include Mira Betz, Jill Parker, FatChanceBellyDance, Rachel Brice, my mentor Hannan Sultan, and my first teacher Nandana. Her goal is to incorporate all contemporary styles of bellydance into a holistic melange. The majority of Sara's background has been in Tribal Fusion bellydance, but she also study Modern Egyptian and whatever else she can get my hands on!

She is committed to her pursuit of bellydance as an artform. She strives constantly to be a better dancer-- not necessarily a dancer who can do jaw-dropping stunts (although those are nice too), but someone who dances as naturally as most people breathe. She hopes to grow a little closer to that goal every day, every time she practices.

Coming along with Sara to perform at Pittsboro By Gaslight will be the fantastic Kim Infiniti & the dynamic duo, Jenaliz.

Ouida de la Gouttiere was born on the streets of New York to a drunken father and a slatternly mother. She was sent to the country at age fifteen to work for a wealthy couple. The wife was ill; the husband was lecherous. See Ouida in person to hear the whole terrible tale!

PERFORMERS: Silver Kitsune

Silver Kitsune comes to us direct from Charlotte, NC, where she performs with Big Mamma's House of Burlesque. Silver Kitsune often gives an Asian flair to her performances and is an absolute delight to watch on stage.

PERFORMERS: Doctor Q & Talloolah Love

Doctor Q, the self professed morally ambiguous audio arranger and general terpsichorean has been delighting audiences of the higher aesthetic for some time. He strides into town with his mesmerizing fervor ready to get gentlemanly with it in a most eccentric way. He is excited to bring you his particular flavor of party sparking fervor that has inspired the fantastic events that are all the rage south of Pittsboro. He is back here at in your lovely town a second time, after ringing in the new year with the always amazing Davenport Sisters at a smashingly clock-break event (no clocks went to waste, though, we steampunks love those cogs). He is the founder of The Artifice Club and invites you to his next seasonal soiree, the 2nd Annual Mechanical Masquerade: A Paranormal Fantasy on November 12, 2011. Talloolah Love proudly hails from Atlanta. She is well versed in the steampunk aesthetic and has been referenced as a leader in "putting it all together" in relation to events, numbers, costumes, accessories, shows, press kits, what have you, the woman's a whiz at it! Recently, she performed at, and was the Vendor coordinator for, the Americana Burlesque and Sideshow Festival 2011 in Asheville, NC. She has stage managed and performed for The Artifice Club, she teaches classes for her new series The Textbook Tease with Talloolah Love and Friends, and is the producer for the AnachroCon burlesque show 2011 and 2012, as well as for the 2012 Dragon*Con burlesque show. Coined as the south's leading steampunk burlesque performer, she is so happy to be joining the Davenport Sisters and can't wait to show just how "put together" She really can be!

Historic Pittsboro: July 1939

Dorothea Lange (May 26, 1895 – October 11, 1965) was an influential American documentary photographer and photojournalist, best known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Lange's photographs humanized the tragic consequences of the Great Depression and profoundly influenced the development of documentary photography.



With the onset of the Great Depression, Lange turned her camera lens from the studio to the street. Her studies of unemployed and homeless people captured the attention of local photographers and led to her employment with the federal Resettlement Administration (RA), later called the Farm Security Administration (FSA).



During her work with the FSA, Dorothea Lange visited Pittsboro, NC on a Saturday afternoon in July of 1939. She was staying in Chapel Hill, and she would have traveled down highway 15, through the mill town of Bynum, across the Haw River and into Pittsboro from the north. It looks like she took a few shots of the approach to the Chatham County Court House as she came into town. She probably parked along Hillsboro Street when she got out of the car, mixed and mingled with the Saturday afternoon crowd.



Her photographic haul included an arresting shot of locals dressed up and conversing in front of the Poe building on the corner of Hillsboro and West Salisbury. For many years the building housed Edwards Antiques, and now boasts our neighborhood watering hole, the venerable City Tap.
